Pre-Construction Primer
Pre-Construction Primer
Pre-Construction Primer is a coating that is used on steel plates prior to the fabrication of a part. Manufacturers use these coatings to prevent and control corrosion before ship construction. Typically they are a two-part epoxy composed of inorganic zinc. Pre-Construction primers have good welding qualities, prepare easily, and allow easy ship assembly.
Pre-construction primer can be over coated during the finish paint process. The primer is cleaned and prepped for the next coating system. Europe allows over coating of the primer. Current US Navy practices require the removal of the primer for critical areas such as bilges and tanks.
