DoD Releases Funding for Coatings Training. SSPC subcontract provides $250,000 for government personnel to take coatings training courses through SSPC.

The DoD is in the process of transitioning product qualification information from Qualified Products Lists (QPL) to the new Qualified Products Database (QPD), which is accessible via ASSIST. All new and revised product qualification information is now being issued via the QPD; no more new or revised QPLs will be issued. For additional information on the QPL-QPD transition, see Defense Standardization Program Policy Memo 07-3.

NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32 (Cleaning and Painting Requirements) now applies to both surface ship and submarine preservation. See NAVSEA's letter re: Guidance for Submarine Preservation and the Use of NAVSEA Standard Item 009-32 for details.

NAVSEA Preservation Technical and Quality Assurance Assessment Program
NAVSEA Preservation Technical and Quality Assurance Assessment Program

The most important factor influencing the life expectancy of protective coating systems is the quality of the application process. Based on this and a number of recent costly premature coating system failures, the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) has established a program to identify preservation process shortfalls and improve naval ship preservation work. NAVSEA and the National Surface Treatment Center have teamed to develop an evaluation method in the form of a Preservation Technical and Quality Assurance (QA) Assessment Program. This assessment first establishes a baseline of an activity's current preservation processes to determine how well technical and QA requirements are being met in the field. Then it identifies both strengths and weaknesses and fosters solution development to continuously improve the quality of the preservation process.
